Esfandiar Monfaredzadeh: the sound beneath the story
You’ve heard him in Gheysar, Dash Akol, Reza Motori The music hits before the story does. It curls around your ear like a whisper before the first punch is thrown, the first tear falls, the first cigarette lights. In an interview, he tells the story of where it all began. Farzad Ghadimi and Saeed Dehghan drop ‘Rasmi’, no skip
I first encountered Farzad Ghadimi nearly three years ago, when his debut single Shelik burst forth like a sudden spark in the dark. That track wasn’t merely a promising start—it was a declaration. From the opening bars, it was clear that a distinctive new voice had emerged in Persian rap, one that refused to be…
“In Iran They Call Me English and in England They Ask Me Where I’m From”: Navigating Identity and Belonging in Bea Dero’s Bound by Two Homes
What does it mean to belong to two places, yet fully to neither? For many growing up in the diaspora, this sense of in-betweenness—a constant balancing act between identities, languages and cultures—is part of everyday life. “In Iran they call me English and in England they ask me where I’m from,” says British-Iranian artist Bea…

Hichkas Teams Up With Poobon For New Track ‘Har Ye Rooz’

While Hichkas had collaborated with Mahdyar Aghajani for almost two decades, following the release of the album Mojaz in 2020, he increasingly took on the responsibility of composing music himself in tracks such as Bezan, In Yekiyam Vase, and Ma Edame Darim. This shift sparked criticism from his fans regarding the production quality of his recent works. In November 2023, on his ‘X’ page, he announced his intention to collaborate with Iranian composers across various styles including rap, electronic, film music, and orchestral for his upcoming projects. In response to this announcement, one of the Persian rap media outlets, “Out of Context Rap-e Farsi“, suggested Poobon, a move that excited both Hichkas and Poobon.

Today, in a surprising turn of events, Hichkas and Poobon collaborated on a song titled Har Ye Rooz, with Poobon serving as producer and chorus singer. Historically, Hichkas had predominantly worked with members of the Moltafat label, making this collaboration with Poobon a notable departure that suggests a willingness to explore new avenues and collaborate with emerging talents within the Persian rap scene. While “Har Ye Rooz” continues to touch on Iranian politics, there’s a discernible evolution in Hichkas’ artistic approach, demonstrating maturity both lyrically and musically compared to his recent works.

This collaboration underscores the importance of bridging the generational gap within Iranian rap and fostering partnerships between established veterans and up-and-coming talents with diverse musical influences. Hichkas’ efforts to challenge traditional categorizations within Persian rap, particularly the dichotomy of “Underground/Mainstream”, reflect a broader shift towards a more inclusive and collaborative ethos within the genre. As such, it’s unsurprising to witness a growing trend towards moderation and openness among Persian rap artists and audiences, signaling a promising future for cross-spectrum collaborations within the Iranian rap community.”
